[Pages:12] Ramblings of a Parish Priest:

Dear Fellow Disciples,

HAPPY FEAST DAY! Today our parish celebrates our patron, St. Edward the Confessor! I'm sure like many of you, I didn't know who St. Edward was, nor did I ever hear of him, until I was assigned to this wonderful parish. St. Edward is an amazing man and model disciple we can all learn from and go to as our patron saint. There are four virtuous parts of St. Edward's life that we should all strive to imitate here at St. Edward Parish.

Model of Holiness St. Edward lived a life of intentional and focused prayer. As a lover of the Benedictine Community (St. Edward built Westminster Abbey for the Benedictines), St. Edward modeled his own prayer life off the Rule of St. Benedict. St. Edward's day revolved around his prayer life, and he did everything he could to keep God at the center of his life. St. Edward knew there was nothing he would accomplish without the help of almighty God.

Gift of Discernment Having the ability to discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit and the will of God the Father is a great spiritual gift. Only those who have a deep prayer life can properly discern these spiritual things. St. Edward had these gifts in that he knew what was coming from God and what was not. St. Edward desired deep in his heart to be a Benedictine Monk, but this was his desire, and not the will of God. When the opportunity presented itself for Edward to take the thrown as King of England, he discerned that this was the way God was calling him to serve the Church. England needed a good and holy king to lead the people toward Christ, the King of Kings. Edward was the man God chose for that job. St. Edward discerned that being a monk was his goal, and not Gods.

Celibacy and Chastity Following the gift of discernment came Edward discerning that while God was calling him to be king, he was also still called to a celibate life. St. Edward did have a Queen, Edith of Wessex, but they never had any children because Edward felt called to a celibate life. The virtue of chastity is one we're all called to. Husbands and wives are called to live chastity by not objectifying and using each other for sexual pleasure. As a celibate man, I'm

called to live chastity by not objectifying women. No one should be watching pornography, visiting strip clubs, using various medias to engage in sexual pleasures, etc. All of these are examples of un-chaste behaviors. Chastity is the virtue of seeing each other as a child of God and sibling in Christ. Chastity stops me from viewing another person as a means to my own personal pleasure or gain. St. Edward is a model of chastity for all, and celibacy, for those of us called to that virtuous way of life as well.

Care for the Poor St. Edward cared deeply for the poor and was well known during his reign as being a king who loved the poor. There's a famous story of St. Edward giving his official ring, signifying he is the King, away to a poor person looking for money. As most monarchs and political leaders, they don't often have cash on hand, so Edward gave the poor man his ring. Often in icons or paintings of St. Edward you will see him holding a ring, reminding us of this story and witness to how St. Edward cared for the poor.

On this feast of St. Edward, let's call on our parish patron to help us live virtuous lives of holiness, chastity, discernment, and caring for the poor. My sisters and brothers let's live radical lives of discipleship that constantly look out for others before ourselves. Let's invite our neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers to share in our joy around the Altar of the Lord. Let's model our own lives after our patron, St. Edward, and after his role model: Jesus Christ.

Happy Feast Day,

Fr. Dom

All are welcome to attend the Healing Mass and receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick can be received by any baptized Catholic who is suffering in mind, body, or sprit.

Praying by Lighting Candles

It has been part of our Catholic tradition to light candles at the shrines of Saints for centuries. The lighting of a candle symbolizes for us the eternal light of Christ that casts out all darkness. In this Easter season we look to the Paschal Candle for this symbol as well.

To light a candle at a shrine, like our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph shrines, we're seeking the light of Christ through the intercession of that particular Saint to answer our prayer. Each candle stays lit for three days and we ask for a $3.00 donation to pay for the candle.

Consider participating in this devotion if you haven't before.

LEGACY PLANNING SECURE THE FUTURE OF

ST. ED PARISH

Don't cancel life insurance you no longer need! Consider instructing your life insurance agent to include St. Edward Parish as a primary or secondary beneficiary on your policy. By naming our parish as beneficiary, you'll provide lasting financial support and possibly qualify for tax benefits as well. It costs nothing to change the beneficiary on your policy and will mean everything to our future parish community.

Consult your insurance agent to see if this is an option for you. For more information, please contact Mark Besztery, our Director of Operations (mark@), or contact Krystina M. Campbell, Planned Giving Officer, Archdiocese of Chicago at 312.534.5404 or kcampbell@.

HELP NEEDED IN LIVE-STREAM MINISTRY

The pandemic, for all its terribleness, brought about a new ministry at St. Ed's where we livestream all our liturgies on YouTube and Facebook. We have a small, but very dedicated, team of parishioners who run our system daily so people at home can pray and worship God with our community of faith. It is not difficult to learn the system and you will receive plenty of training and shadowing, but we need help! If you have any knowledge of working with a desktop, you are perfect! Please contact Fr. Dom via e-mail at frclemente@ to get more information or to sign up and join this important ministry.

Please consider joining this ministry and helping our parishioners at home worship God with our community of faith!

St. Isidor, patron saint of technology, pray for us!

SPARE CHANGE SAVES BABIES

Beginning this weekend, October 9th and 10th, our Parish will be participating in the Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women's Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This nonprofit organization directly assists Mothers and families experiencing a crisis pregnancy by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing& monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. They also offer Free ultrasounds! By God's grace they have saved over 40,000 babies since their founding in 1984.

Please take a baby bottle home with you from Church next weekend. Fill it with spare change and return it by October 31st. This is a simple but crucial fund raising effort for The Women's Centers. Please note the bottles cost almost $1.00 each and are recycled afterwards so please return at the end of this project. If you want to donate by check, please make it payable to The Women's Center. You can also call 773-794-1313 to donate.

Thank you for defending life and remember to keep all the Womens Center counsellors in your prayers.

RESPECT LIFE

Only with prayer - prayer that storms the heaven for justice and mercy, prayer that cleanses our hearts and souls - will the culture of death, that surrounds us today, be replaced with a culture of life. USCCB

PRAYER FOR RESPECT FOR LIFE

St. Gerard Majella, women the world over have

adopted you as their patron in the joys and

fears of childbearing. Today, we invoke your

S

intercession for the Pro-Life movement. Pray

that all will look upon human life as a great gift

from God to be accepted and loved, not as an

unwanted burden to be destroyed. Assist from

heaven, the efforts of those on earth, who are

enlisted in the Christlike crusade of promoting

the dignity and value of all human life, particu-

larly the unborn. This we ask through Christ,

Our Lord.

Amen
