I will send you a google link. Additional office hours: Friday during your block period. Course Description: The Chemistry curriculum continues students’ investigations of the physical sciences that began in Grades K-8 The course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills in chemistry. Chemistry extends the physical sciences to more abstract concepts including, the structure and properties of matter, structure of atoms, the interaction matter, and the conservation of matter. These concepts are investigated through laboratory experiences and fieldwork designed for students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in science as inquiry. Outcome Expectations: At the end of this course students should be able to:Use appropriate scientific tools to observe record, organize, analyze, interpret, write, and present the results of scientific investigations clearly and accurately. Use information, calculations, and predications to explain the nature, properties, classification, and nomenclature of matter including the prediction of chemical formulas based on balance of charges. Use the law of conservation of matter, including molarity and molality, to determine chemical composition under different reaction types and conditions. Use modern atomic theory to explain the characteristic properties of atoms including size, charge, particles, isotopes, chemical bonds, light emission, and electron movement. Explain the trends in the Periodic table and use the knowledge to predict the properties of representative elements. Demonstrate the effects of varying factors (concentration, temperature, and pressure) on the rate of chemical reaction. Collect, analyze, and compare data on the effects of motion of atoms and molecules on physical and chemical process and relate these to energy flow during phase change. Explain the process involved in solute-solvent interactions and evaluate the nature of acids compared with bases.Course Content and SequenceChapter(s)Atomic Structure and lab safety4Modern Atomic Theory5Periodic Trends6Measurements & Calculations 1, 3Matter & Changes2Ionic Nomenclature & Bonding7,9Covalent Nomenclature Bonding & Geometry8,9Chemical Reactions11,20Chemical Quantities (Moles)10Stoichiometry12Solutions 16Acids, Bases and Salts19Gases13.1 and 14Thermochemistry 17Reaction Rates & Equilibrium18Electrochemistry21Course Expectations/Class rules: ( Remote Learning included)Students must arrive to class 5 minutes before schedule, log on to google meet, read the daily agenda and start working on their bell assignments. All microphones must be muted and videos must be on. Attendance will be entered in IC. Your proof of attendance is your visibility on google meet throughout the session, your daily assignments being turned in during the period and your daily check-in form. Late students are expected to follow the tardy protocol determined by school administration. Please choose a designated seated arrangement at home and do not move your computer around. Students must be prepared each day (charge laptops overnight, assignments, notebook, paper, pencil, etc.)Students must be respectful to the teacher, their peers, and any visitors in the classroom. Always raise your hand to speak or type in the chat and I will give you and opportunity to speak. (If you have something important, please wait for every student to settle down, wait till the instruction is complete, then raise your hand and ask. If you feel that you may forget, write it down) and wait to be acknowledged.Students are expected to put forth effort and try their best.No food or drink. Students who have special requirements per doctor’s orders must have the proper documentation in the personal student file. Remember, this is a regular class. Eating during class takes away your focus, as well as have a risk of destroying your technology. Students will complete all errands before bell rings. If you would like to be excused for a rest room break, please let the teacher know in the chat window. Lab stations are assigned for a lab, students are not allowed to change the lab group without prior approval from the instructor. All group members are responsible for the cleanliness of the lab station or else will receive consequences determined by the teacher. You will be assigned google meet or google classroom small groups to work in. Students must adhere to the guidelines as stated by the school (including but not limited to the policy on electronic devices) and county handbooks, or the appropriate consequences will be applied.Discipline is a top priority during all times. Please be mindful of your team-mates during small group interaction and do not do anything that can get you into trouble. Wait for the class to be dismissed.During google meet, please follow all instructions given by the teacher for the period. Take notes. Ask questions. After google meet, during practice sessions, you are expected to be on task and complete the required work. Closing is at the end of the period when you can get your doubts and questions clarified. It is strongly recommended that students turn in their work on time in google classroom in order to avoid any unwanted discussion regarding zero in the grade book. GC maintains the time and date that the assignment was turned in. Textbook: The book being used for this class is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Modern Georgia Chemistry Students are responsible for their textbook once they are issued. The replacement cost of the book is $67.33 Damaged book fees will apply for books not returned in the same condition that they were issued. However, Class progress report may be requested from teacher anytime during the year. Students or parents may also check grades frequently using the electronic resource Infinite Campus. Assignments:All assignments are expected to have the following information in the upper, right hand corner of the paper (assignments without name will not be accepted)1. Name (first & last name)2. Submission date3. Subject with class period4. Assignment title/description**Please check google classroom or the teacher’s webpage frequently for the calendar and assignments.Henry county schools have adapted google classroom, all assignments will be posted in google classroom, students are required to complete the assignments electronic and submit in google classroom.Paper copies of assignments may be provided only on request.Make up work policy:It is the student’s and parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to make arrangements to make-up work missed due to excused absences. These arrangements should be made by making appropriate arrangements with the teacher and should not disrupt instructional time. Makeup work is allowed as per HCBOE policy for the excused absences. Late work policy:Chemistry is a college preparatory course; therefore assignments are expected to be completed on time. This includes all assignments. As a chemistry student it is important that you take an active role in your learning and begin to become self motivated as these skills are curtail for success at the college level. Students can only receive a maximum score 50% for late work if submitted prior to assignments being returned in class. Students have the option to attend tutorial and complete assignment with any chemistry teacher to receive a maximum of 70% on late work.Laboratory Safety:A separate Lab Safety Contract will be provided for review and signature by both the student and parent. It must be signed and returned before you can participate in lab. Failure to adhere by the safety contract during lab will result in not being able to participate in the lab and a grade of zero for the assignmentScience Fair ProjectScience Fair projects will receive grades each week, which holds 40% of your grade in honors chemistry: included in the practice work category. It is not an optional assignment. You may choose to do a group project of maximum 2 participants. Once you have committed to being in a group, you may not withdraw. Academic Honesty:Students are expected to do their own work. If you are caught cheating, plagiarizing or not completing your own work the county procedure will be followed and you will be given a grade of zero.Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) or Technology provided by HCBOE:Students are allowed to use digital devices to aid in their learning process. These devices are to be used in the classroom at the discretion of the teacher. For any device being used for purposes that are not educational or beneficial to the learning process, the following steps will be taken. 1st offense- Teacher will give student a verbal warning2nd offense- Teacher will contact the parent and/or request a conference.3rd offense- Parent will be contacted and an office referral will be submitted to an administrator.Note:?
