Our Beliefs ?We believe parents are the first teachers. Parents set the foundation, provide resources and work in partnership with the school. Children are natural learners; parents and teachers should have mutual respect, build trust, provide a safe, and

healthy environment.

? We believe teachers spark the interest to open the world to possibilities by facilitating the learning process and inspiring students to be lifelong learners.

? We believe parents are our partners in this work!

Message from the Principal

Dear Langston Hughes Staff, Parents, Students and Community Members:

Thank you for your partnership during this very different but important time, Returning Back To School! While we are not able to have in-school learning we will still grow and succeed together. Together, with compassion, Grace, patience, perseverance, and positivity we will successfully conquer this school year.

The L.Hughes educators and staff are honored to have this opportunity to serve the families and scholars of Langston Hughes STEM Elementary School. Langston Hughes has a history of academic and cultural excellence that is the result of the collegial partnerships between the entire school staff, students, parents and community members. The results have not happened by accident but are the result of hard work, dedication, and collaboration. This formula for success and a focus on what is best for children is what will propel our school to the next level.

The role of principal is one that I value and take quite seriously. I understand that parents are entrusting their children, their most precious gift, to our school. I have been privileged to have spent 24 wonderful years, as an educator with the Chicago Public Schools. I have had many professional responsibilities in the field of education, including teacher, reading coach, assistant principal and Interim Principal. The commonality in my two decades of experience has been the collaboration with others to provide the best possible education experience for scholars.

Even though the start of this school year may feel different, it is the beginning of another school year with opportunities for scholars to grow academically, socially, and civically. Our school, Langston Hughes STEM, our families, community members, staff, educators, and Scholars are what makes us a community. We want to be in our school building with scholars to nurture and grow. However, during this time we must communicate and form strong bonds and connections between students, teachers, and parents. Together as partners WE are more enough for our scholars to grow and to succeed.

As the instructional leader of our STEM elementary school, my greatest initiative and service is to provide the leadership that will facilitate a rewarding, enriching educational experience for every student. As principal, I will embrace the 3Rs, supportive Relationships, Rigorous instruction and a focus on Results. As principal I am committed and will embrace the task of continuing to utilize the talent and resources within our school community to ensure students are prepared for the next chapter of their lives, moving toward high school, college and/or careers. I realize that differentiated, rigorous and relevant instruction that meets the needs of

each student will be the vehicle for continuing successes. A team approach, in an inviting, safe and supportive learning environment is necessary to help us achieve and maintain the desired learning outcomes for our scholars. Through a close and collegial partnership with all stakeholders associated with Langston Hughes, I am confident we can make our school an even better place for our students to learn and grow. I am excited about the new school year as we embark on this educational journey together. Together, we can ensure that this year is a success for all!

Yours In Education, Kimbreana Taylor-Goode

Langston Hughes School History Originally Langston Hughes was a K-6 CPS School, occupying the Roseland Christian School building. After 1980 Langston Hughes School expanded its curriculum to meet the needs of students through 8th grade.

In 2000, the Chicago Board of Education resolved to build a state-of-the-art universally designed school. A nationwide architectural contest was held in 2000-2001. However, due to economic factors, construction was not able to begin until fall of 2007. On August 17, 2009, the doors of the new Langston Hughes Elementary School were opened. The school is designed for 840 Pre-K through 8th grade students. Twenty percent of the school population have special needs requirements. The state? of-the art school includes 30 classrooms, in addition a music room, STEM lab, library media center, gymnasium, and a cafeteria.

The new Langston Hughes School merged general education students and diverse learners, from Davis Developmental Center. We are a Pre-K through 8th grade school. The student body is predominantly African American and provides services to over 500 students in the Roseland community.

In the 1990's Langston Hughes School began providing World Language instructionoffering Japanese cultural and language instruction. The excellence of our program attracted the attention of the Chicago Consul-General of Japan; Ichiro Ozawa, the head of the Democratic Party of Japan, (DPJ) and as a result of this partnership, students and staff members visit Japan.

Langston Hughes Remote Learning 2020 - 2021 Plan. Welcome to the start of an awesome new school year! Although our students will be learning at home and starting the year via remote learning, please know that we have been working diligently to provide them with a high-quality learning experience. The first day of remote learning is Tuesday, September 8 th . The school day for K-8 students is 7:45 a.m. -2:45 p.m. It's our goal to provide students with remote learning opportunities that close the gap due to instructional loss. We will provide students with routines and structures to help stay engaged in standards aligned content, as well as provide support for students' individual academic and social emotional needs. We are in this together for the success of all students!
