Welcome to the start of an awesome new school year! Although our students will be learning at home and starting the year via remote learning, please know that we have been working diligently to provide them with a high-quality learning experience. The first day of remote learning is Tuesday, September 8th . The school day for K-8 students is 7:45 a.m. -2:45 p.m. It's our goal to provide students with remote learning opportunities that close the gap due to instructional loss. We will provide students with routines and structures to help stay engaged in standards aligned content, as well as provide support for students' individual academic and social emotional needs. We are in this together for the success of all students!

3 Steps to Remote Learning at Hughes

Step 1. Connect to Hughes

Current families: Call 773-535-5075 if your contact information has changed. This will ensure you receive important school and district updates.

New CPS families: E nroll your child at Hughes and provide your contact information to receive important district and school updates. Please use this link to make an appointment for enrollment and transfers or visit the web address



Please click on the link to review the E nrollment and Transfer Guide. Submit your child's health and wellness forms and any other required documentation included in the Back to School Packet

your child will receive in their Google Classroom. Please email the forms to your child's teacher, if possible. If you need to drop off completed forms at the school, please come to Langston Hughes, Door 1 and a member of our team will come out to receive and then review your forms while you wait.

Step 2. Connect to a Device

Your child can use any device that connects to the internet to participate in remote learning. We recommend using a Chromebook, iPad, or Windows Laptop with the Chrome web browser.

Complete this form L.Hughes Technology Request Form if your child needs a device. If your child received a device from CPS, please refer to the following guidance to get started. If your child does not have a

device, please contact Hughes at 773-535-5075. Connect your device to your home Wi-Fi network. If you don't have Wi-Fi, find out if you are eligible for free internet service

through Chicago Connected using your child's student ID and birthdate to receive your activation code. Have your child log into their CPS.edu account at c ps.edu/portal to ensure they can access the Google Tools for Education. If

If your child does not have a CPS.edu account, click here for instructions on how to set up the account for the first time, also known as "claiming an account."

Once your child is logged into their account, explore the Google Education Suite and familiarize yourself with Google Classroom.

Step 3. Connect to your child's teacher on Day 1 at Hughes via Google Classroom and Google Meet.

School will start on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. This is the first day of school for all students. Know your child's schedule for the day and connect with teachers. Staff contact information is here. Email the teacher's for

your child's grade level, to get more information. Follow these steps to log in to your C PS Email.Follow these steps if you forgot your password to your CPS email. All students are issued a CPS account upon enrollment, however, students who have never logged in to their account will need

to activate the account before they can access their email and other CPS applications. Students can set up this account on their own or ask their parents or guardians for help. Follow these steps to c reate a student email. You can also email teachers for your grade level for support with e-mails, passwords, schedules and Google classroom. Sign up for the Google Guardian Summary through the invitation from your child's teacher. Attendance Matters Greatly: Class Time: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. for all students in grades K-8. Full Day PreK Class Time: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. Half day Pre-K: AM PreK begins at 7:45 a.m. and PM PreK begins at 12:15 p.m. Attendance i s mandatory and will be taken every school day. Please ensure your child logs into their CPS.edu account account at cps.edu/portal on time. All students are required to attend remote learning classes each day, just as they would during in-person instruction. Students are REQUIRED to log into G oogle Classroom daily and attend the Google Meet using CPS Gmail Accounts o nly in order to be marked in attendance.

IMPORTANT WARNING: P lease be mindful that your child may be recorded during the sessions. All CPS devices are monitored.

Attendance is REQUIRED, not just submission of work. All work must be submitted via Google Classroom for grading. Students are required to participate in synchronous learning, teacher led instruction and complete a synchronous

learning/independent assignments. Regular grades will be given instead of pass/fail. Mics must be muted while teachers are talking/unmute for discussion or when prompted. Dress Attire: Students are to be fully dressed/covered and out of bed. A quiet work place is needed. Inappropriate language, content and/or behavior will not be tolerated. Adhere to CPS Student

Code of Conduct C PS Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use Policy . Please be mindful that all CPS devices will be monitored remotely and class sessions will be recorded. Parents may report challenging behavior or social emotional learning concerns using the Hughes Referral Form.
