Circuit Rider St. Paul's United Methodist Church 714 Herbertsville Rd Brick, NJ 08724November 2019Pastor’s PenDear friends,“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:3-6) Indeed, this month of November, is a great time of thanks and giving every year! As we remember all the saints of God, who have blessed us in our fellowship during their lives and have now gone on to receive their heavenly reward in glory, we give thanks. For their faithful service and generosity to generations to come, we give thanks. As we remember all of our veterans who have given so much to us as Americans to preserve our freedoms, many even with the sacrificial gift of their lives, we give thanks. As we come together as a congregation to remember our stewardship of all the gifts and graces with which the Lord has entrusted our care through commitments of time, talent, and treasures, we are ever grateful. Indeed, as we gather together to ask the Lord’s blessings, as we count our many blessings one by one, celebrating God’s faithfulness and abundant providence overflowing, we give thanks. Let us give thanks with grateful hearts for all of God’s goodness, grace, and kindness to us that prompt us to be graceful and generous in the overflow of these many blessings to others for His Sake. We are “blessed to be a blessing”! May all grace and generosity be seen in abundance as we reflect His goodness in our lives each and everyday. Blessings abound! In His Regard,Pastor Al St. Paul’s UMWHoliday Shoppe and Attic SaleNorcross HallSaturday, November16th - 10-2 PMHomemade Lunch, Christmas Gifts & Decorations, Crafts, Bake Goods, White Elephant, Jewelry, Handmade Items, Candy, Kids' Table Pictures with Santa ClausShop til you drop and enjoy a delicious lunchDrop off donations on Nov 15th after 12:30 PMLanguage LessonsProverbs 22:6 says “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”?As discussed last month, the subtle meaning lost in translation is that each child is different, and thus so is “the way they should go.” This holds true for all people, even into adulthood. Each of us is “fearfully and wonderfully made”?(Psalm 139:14) with a unique set of personality quirks and flaws, dreams, wants and desires. Each of us is also ‘built’ to give and receive love differently. Gary Chapman explores this in his book? The Five Love Languages.?Each person has one main one, and some mix of the other four languages. Chapman defines the five as Quality Time, Acts of Service, Gifts, Words of Affirmation and Physical Touch. There is a quiz online that you can take to find out what yours is at? danger in knowing which language your spouse ‘speaks’ is thinking that you know then how to love them. Using the language metaphor, knowing someone speaks Swahili is a long way from knowing how to speak to them and be understood in their native tongue. Obviously, you still need to learn their language, especially if it is different than yours! Even if you share a language, it goes without saying that you probably are fluent in different ‘dialects.’ The good news is you probably share the same actual, spoken language, and can discuss what loving - and being loved - means to each other.?Since every human is unique, each of the five languages has an infinite number of dialects. A husband who knows his wife has “acts of service” as her main love language might think he is loving her by taking care of her car; changing the oil, checking the tires, keeping it clean, etc. Cars are important to him, and therefore he believes he is loving her. She might not care about the car though, but would be thrilled by him vacuuming and doing the laundry. A husband with words of affirmation as his language might not be moved by his wife telling him directly she finds him attractive (she values attractiveness, and thus thinks commenting on his appearance is loving him). He would beam though, to see her praising his fatherhood skills or ability to fix things on social media. We all come into marriage with prejudices, predilections and predispositions… the only way to find out what your spouse’s are is to talk with them. The last wrinkle in this is figuring out how to ‘speak’ your spouse’s language in all aspects of your lives together. Ask yourself how can acts of service manifest when planning date nights? How can gifts be given without spending money. How many different ways can words of affirmation be given? How many different media can they be used in? How can physical touch be incorporated into activities that *aren’t* sexual? Conversely, how can the other four languages be brought *into* the bedroom?Proverbs 18:15 says:The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.Marriage is ordained by God to be for a lifetime, so that we have as long as possible to learn about our spouses. Understanding what their love language is should be an early lesson, as it is foundational to figuring out how to love them as they want and need. Mastering that language should be an ongoing pursuit. Their dialogue is unique to them, and alive! Like all languages, new words are added and old words fall out of use. Like marriage itself, undertaking “language lessons” is a choice you must make - over and over - as long as you both shall live. Carol Choir I want to thank the children of the carol choir who enthusiastically participated in singing praises to our Lord this past year. When they had prayed, the place where they were gathered trembled; and all were filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke boldly the God's word."Acts 4:29, 31?The burning from the lashes was still fresh on their backs, when Peter and John returned from prison to the Upper Room. Reunited with the disciples, they bent their knees and made a peculiar prayer. Surprisingly, they didn't pray for protection. Nor did they pray that God would punish the leaders who wanted to destroy them.?They prayed for the mission; may God extend His Hand "so that healings, signs and wonders may be done through the name of the "Holy Son of God "(Acts 4:31). They were thinking about the crowds that needed Christ. Then they asked for something themselves. Yet again, not what one would expect, but they prayed for "boldness" to speak the Word of God, they do not ask for protection but usefulness and a harvest. No wonder God unleashes the awesome power of His Spirit! The place trembles and they are filled with the Holy Spirit! They go out and preach boldly the Word of God.?Observe the divine pattern: First you fill yourself with God, then you go out to accomplish His mission. Today, seek His Anointing before going out. It will change your day, and perhaps the destiny of others.?Pray: Father, fill me with You; Use me for Your Glory.Hector MezaChristmas trees SalesUnited Methodist MenStarting Saturday November 30, 2019From 5pm to 9pm Monday thru FridayFrom 9am to 8pm SaturdayFrom Noon to 5pm Sunday Delivery of the trees Time TBA Sign up chart to help sell trees will be up in the Narthex or in Eleanor Norcross Fellowship Hall in earlyChristmas Store Items Needed! As part of the Christmas Store families are supplied with a toiletry kit. Webster’s Definition: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care; God’s definition also includes Sharing, Caring, Giving, Thankfulness, Sacrifice, Overflowing of Grace, Responsibility, JOY, Faithfulness! Even if we gave everything we have and everything we are, we can never outgive or outlive God!As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. (1 Peter 4:10)We often talk about “Time, Talent and Treasure”. What does that really mean? Have you committed to share your time, your special gifts, and your good fortune to further the work and missions of the Church this year? As year-end approaches, NOW would be a good time to review your past year’s commitment and renew your commitment to give your best to the work of the church. What can you do?Can you volunteer just an extra hour or two at the church to help in the office, do some yardwork, or perhaps do an extra chore around the church or parsonages?Do you have a special talent or skill that would be of service to the church?Do you own a business? Could offer your services pro bono or for a reduced fee?Do you have a special mission or cause that you would like to volunteer for? There are many ministries and missions here at St Paul’s and all could use your ideas and talent.Perhaps you don’t have the time or desire to lead a committee, but could you give a smaller amount of time and dedication to complete a smaller project? All of the Boards within the administration of the Church are volunteer positions. Would you be interested in participating in the Finance, Administrative, Staff Parish Relations, or Trustees Boards? If so, let it be known to Pastor Al. Every year the church asks us to pledge our giving to the church. Is this a true commitment for you? The church uses these pledges to estimate the giving for the following year, to help determine the budget. If you don’t currently pledge your giving, would you consider it for the next year? If you do currently pledge, are you on track to fulfill your financial commitment? Some other things to consider as year-end approaches…Might you be expecting a pay raise of which you could commit some to the Church going forward?Have you consulted your tax advisor to see if you can legally take advantage of any tax provisions to lower your expected tax burden? If you have not yet taken a Require Minimum Distribution from a retirement account, could you have it or a portion directly transferred to the Church (a Qualified Charitable Distribution-this keeps your adjusted gross income low)?Have you been advised that it might be tax advantageous to make a charitable contribution this year, but you don’t know who you wish to contribute to, or you wish to actually get the deduction this year, but make the donation in the future? (Consider a donor advised fund of which our Church could be a beneficiary).Do you have appreciated stock which you want to sell but don’t wish to realize a capital gain for tax purposes?Do you have a life insurance policy that you feel you no longer need? All these could be opportunities to benefit yourself from a tax standpoint as well as the Church. If you wish more details regarding any of these ideas, please speak to a member of the Generosity Team. Your inquiries will be treated with tact and confidentiality. 438150-180975CHANCEL CHOIR CHRISTMAS CANTATA & CHRISTMAS CONCERT BANDSt. Paul’s Chancel Choir and Christmas Concert Band will present their Christmas cantata and concert on December 21 and 22, Saturday and Sunday nights, at 7:30 PM. (Snow date December 23).The Chancel Choir will present “Born Is the King—It’s Christmas”. This is a new and exciting musical which takes us through the story of Christ’s birth –from the centuries of people awaiting Jesus’ arrival, Mary and Joseph taking a cattle stall as a birthing place, the shepherds and angels heralding the Messiah’s birth and finally to the journey of the Magi. Though the story occurred over 2000 years ago, it remains as riveting, compelling, and relevant to us today! Our Chancel Choir will be joined at times by narrators, Children’s Choirs, and pageantry as well as a beautiful DVD. It is a wonderful celebration of Christ’s birth! Our Christmas Concert Band will present “Songs of the Season” with great Christmas music. Many different styles will be presented including traditional Christmas songs in various settings, “The Polar Express”, and even a “swingin’” Christmas number. Our Concert Band is made up of woodwinds, brass, and percussion players from St. Paul’s and the high schools, colleges, and communities around us. It is a unique ensemble and we are excited to involve our church and community in this instrumental outreach. Why not take time out from the hustle and bustle of holiday planning to experience what the season is really all about. Please mark these dates on your calendar today and invite family and friends to join us. It is sure to be a great part of your Christmas celebration. I am always surprised at what they can accomplish. God does amazing things with them. This notice comes to you in the next year, but still we want to give thanks for last year’s past achievements.“Thank you” doesn’t seem to be enough to Ivy Kirn who is amazing! She thinks of things that I never would have thought of.Barbara Estelle is also always there for advice and accompaniment on the piano. Jane Hasher was a tremendous help this past year too. She was able to step in for us when things got a little crazy. Milt Estelle and Gordon Fisher are so helpful to us. Sometimes C.D.’s and tapes do not want to work for rehearsals. Sometimes I think there’s a Gremlin out to get us!Here is a list of the children that participated last year.
