Purpose of the Job:

The University of Suffolk is seeking an experienced and self-motivated individual for the post of Head of Marketing and Communications in the Directorate of External Relations. The Directorate comprises of marketing and communications (including press and media relations), market research and development, events and conferencing, community engagement, alumni relations, UK/EU and International student recruitment, widening participation (WP), and admissions. The post holder will be responsible for all marketing and communications strategy and activity (including the website), and press and media relations.

After achieving Taught Degree Awarding Powers in November 2015, and University Title in June 2016, the University of Suffolk was officially launched on 1 August 2016. The University has set ambitious targets and plans that will contribute to our continued growth and development.

This position will play a key role within the Directorate of External Relations during an exciting period of our development, leading on and implementing a range of marketing and communication opportunities and strategies for the University including; digital marketing, publications and print material, internal and external communications, promotional and advertising campaigns, brand management. The post-holder is responsible for the day to day line management of staff in the marketing and communications team.

The post holder will need to possess a high level of expertise in marketing, brand and communications strategy, and the ability to advise senior management. You will have a proven track record in the development and delivery of marketing campaigns, alongside a good understanding of the challenges facing the higher education market both in the UK and internationally.

Duties of the Post:

The main duties and responsibilities of the postholder will include:

1. Responsibility for developing, planning and implementing marketing and communications strategies across all marketing channels, in line with institutional objectives, across the University of Suffolk.

2. Ability and creativity to develop new and innovative ways of marketing in the HE sector, ensuring that our marketing is responsive and appropriate to the changing HE landscape.

3. To ensure our marketing strategy and brand are focused towards international markets, as well as regional and national markets.

4. Manage the use and continued roll out of the new University of Suffolk brand and corporate identity, ensuring the corporate guidelines are adhered to by all staff/stakeholders/partners.

5. Work closely with the Head of Student Recruitment and Market Development, to ensure a joined-up approach to all marketing and recruitment activity, and that all our marketing and communications activity is informed by market research and analysis.

6. To lead in the development and implementation of our digital marketing strategy, ensuring we make the most of new opportunities available and effective use of content across different platforms.

7. Work closely with IT services on the development and maintenance of the new University of Suffolk website, ensuring a consistent corporate approach.

8. Responsibility for managing the production all external publications, ensuring editorial accuracy and quality across all print material.

9. Lead on the development and realisation of integrated advertising and marketing campaigns and provide subsequent relevant and cost effective market research, and analysis of marketing campaigns, to support future activity.

10. Work closely with Heads of academic departments and members of their teams in the development of departmental marketing plans for undergraduate and postgraduate courses to support the achievement of strategic and operational targets.

11. Work with other professional services teams to support their marketing requirements. 12. Work with Marketing Managers across the Learning Network to co-ordinate marketing

materials and campaigns and implementation of the brand across the Network. 13. Oversee all press and media strategy and activity, monitoring coverage through use

of online tools. 14. Management and monitoring of the marketing budget and line management of staff in

the areas of marketing and communications. 15. Represent the University at internal and external events as and when required. 16. Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Director of External

Relations or his/her nominee.

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances and do not form part of the contract of employment.
