Expectations:

Friday Art Articles:

Every Friday students will read and discuss a current event in art. We will spend 10 to 20 minutes at the beginning of class. Improving student reading and higher level thinking skills is one of our school improvement goals. Friday Art Articles is one way that will help to achieve that goal.

Tardiness:

Students are allowed ONE tardy warning per quarter. Each tardy thereafter will be referred to the office for disciplinary action. Being later than 20 minutes will count as an absence.

Art History/Aesthetics/Criticism:

Throughout the school year, students will study a variety of artist, art eras, cultural connections and aesthetics ranging from the anatomical studies of the Renaissance to Contemporary and Modern Art movements. Students may view videos, take notes on the artist / art era and do a variety of written assignments. They will also participate in group and individual critics of studied and personally produced work. It is important that the student takes this part of their art education seriously, as it is part of their grade, state assessment, and essential to their artistic scope of knowledge.

Art fees:

A $25.00 art fee is due by Sept. 1, from all students ( except art I, which is a $10.00 fee, also due by Sept. 1st ) to help with the cost of art materials used. This amount in no way covers the entire expense, but does help defray it. Please pay the fee by the due date so needed materials can be ordered in a timely fashion.

Grading rules:

1. All work assigned for the week will be due no later than Thursday.

2. Work will be completed when handed in.

3. Work will be in a presentable condition when handed in.

4. Students absent from class are responsible for getting missed work and its due date.

5. Late work will not be graded after mid-quarter or the end of the quarter.

6. Extra credit work only counts if all assigned work is handed in.

WORK THAT DOES NOT MEET THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS WILL NOT BE GRADED.

• Any test missed must be made up that same week on the student’s time.

Wyoming Standards:

1 Creative Expression Through Production:

Students understand and express themselves through an art form by generating artistic works, participating in and exhibiting the arts. As a result, they arrive at their own knowledge and beliefs for making personal and artistic decisions.

2 Aesthetic Perception:

Reflecting on the arts heightens critical thinking, promotes qualitative judgment, and enhances a student's sense of beauty and balance. Such valuing allows students to make informed personal choices. Aesthetic perception is the exercise of critical thinking and judgment. It requires specific skills, knowledge, techniques, and processes. Aesthetic perception develops a student's ability to weigh the benefits among alternative courses of action. This process can yield multiple rather than singular conclusions.

3 Historical and Cultural Context:

The ability to use and share knowledge is fundamental to human experience. It is important for students to be knowledgeable about the nature, value, and meaning of the arts in the context of their own humanity and with respect to history, cultures and contemporary society.

4 Applications to Life:

The arts are a part of everyone's daily experience and reflect the culture in which they are produced. As students study the arts, it is important for them to understand how the arts relate to other disciplines and to society. The arts have value and significance for daily life. They provide personal fulfillment, whether in vocational, cultural, or recreational pursuits.

Wyoming Performance Standards:

Advanced: Students at the advanced performance level use their skills and knowledge of fine and performing arts to analyze, synthesize, apply, evaluate, and communicate information and ideas.

Basic: Students at the basic performance level ineffectively use their knowledge and skills of fine and performing arts to acquire and communicate information and ideas.
