Course Description: Student will successfully learn to mix paint to create colors necessary for a work of art. Subjects vary according to student selection with only original work produced. This allows for the study of composition, lighting, and subject matter. Projects included self-portraits, still life subjects and abstraction. Students will primarily use water based paints. Both painting course will work on canvas board. Additionally, students will study through reading, writing and class discussion, art history, critical analysis, and the aesthetic merit of paintings
Studio Projects: In-class studio art projects in various drawing media will be assigned during the semester that will be based on the elements and principles of art. Each student is responsible for completing each project by the due date and keeping that project in his or her portfolio (provided and stored in the art room). I will assign between 4-5 major pieces this semester in addition to smaller in-class assignments.
Homework: Homework assignments will be given once a week and to be completed in a sketchbook. Sketchbooks will be due on Mondays at the beginning of class. There will be opportunities to share. Assignments are required to have the students’ signature in ink, assignment title, and a paperclip at the bottom of current page to be graded.
Written Assignments: There will be written assignments that range from written reflections/ self-evaluations on studio projects to short written pieces based on art critiques.
Participation: Daily effort, class participation, and attendance are important to progress. I encourage each student to do his or her best each day. I follow attendance and make-up work policies outlined in the student handbook.

How will studio projects be graded? I will evaluate portfolio work in rubric form as determined by does not meet standard, partially meets standard, exceeds standard, numerically-based.
Five expectations are considered before grading:
1. Effort- visible in the work and/or demonstrated in class; quality time visible in product.
2. Creativity- how original work is!
3. Following Directions- did you explore the assignment as given?
4. Craftsmanship- handles art materials correctly. Final presentation is neat, clean, and
wrinkle-free.
5. Meets assignment objectives- completed each project according to instruction. He or
she demonstrates an understanding of the assignment.
How do I make up missing or incomplete work? You are expected to keep lessons and studio projects in class. You will be given a generous amount of time to finish them. Work is expected to be turned in on the due date. If you need more time, let me know. On occasion I will have an open studio afterschool to allow for the completion of classwork.
General Expectations:
Class dismissal: I dismiss you from class, not the bell. Make sure you have cleaned up your area and returned any supplies to their storage drawers or cupboards.
Top Room Rules:
1. Be safe!
2. Don’t prevent me from teaching.
3. Don’t prevent others from learning.
Refer to the student handbook in your planner for school-wide rules.
What are the consequences of poor behavior? If you have forgotten one of the school or art room rules, I will give you a verbal warning. A following warning will result in any of the following consequence:

Clean up and care of art materials: All students are responsible for cleaning up their
workspace and returning any materials used during class to the appropriate storage areas.

lesson/ project. If a student breaks or destroys art supplies, he or she will be required to
replace the item(s).
